As an Anywhere Library Specialist, I have the incredible opportunity to bring library services far beyond traditional library walls. From senior centers to community parades, fire stations to art walks, every day brings a new adventure. Here are some of my favorite moments from the past year!
A Special Book Request in Shelton
One memorable encounter took place in January 2025 at a senior center in Shelton. A patron approached me with a question: “Does the library purchase books upon request?” The answer was an enthusiastic, “Yes!” He then shared that his brother had recently published a book-one he had worked very hard on-and thought it would make a great addition to our collection.
I took down the title and author’s name, submitted a purchase request, and by my next visit, the book was in our collection! The patron was thrilled, snapping a photo of me holding the book and sending it to his brother. That book, Contraduction by Dan Barker, is now available for checkout. Seeing the joy and pride on his face made my day.
Lighting Up the Christmastown Parade
December 2024 brought another highlight: driving the Anywhere Library van in the annual Shelton Christmastown Parade! With the help of the Shelton Library staff, we decked out the van with twinkling lights, tinsel, and wreaths before rolling through the streets alongside festive floats. It was heartwarming to spot familiar faces in the crowd—patrons and community members I’d met throughout the county. To top it off, we even got a special shout-out from the local radio host!
A Teen's Dedication to the Summer Library Program
In August 2024, I had a surprise visitor at my Anywhere Library stop at a local fire station. A teen rode his bike a full mile just to sign up for the Summer Library Program before the deadline! He was eager to complete the activity sheet before August 31st and was so excited to discover an Anywhere Library stop near his home. We chatted about comics and movies before he rode back, ready to tackle his summer reading goals. His dedication to the program was truly inspiring!
Creativity at the Shelton Art Walk
One of my favorite events of 2024 was the Shelton Art Walk, hosted by Marmo Caffè & Gallery. At my event table, visitors painted mini canvases while we connected over books, art, and library services. By the end of the day, I had spoken with over 180 people—and received 13 beautifully painted canvases as gifts! Seeing the community’s creativity and enthusiasm made the event unforgettable.
A Zaniac Performance to Remember
To wrap up the 2024 Summer Library Program, we hosted Alex Zerbe, The Zaniac, at the Harstine Island Community Hall. His high-energy performance delighted kids and adults alike. One of the best moments? He transformed a child into the sun, complete with a glowing helmet, while demonstrating the Earth and moon’s rotation. For the grand finale, he fired a toilet paper cannon at the ceiling—where the toilet paper hilariously got stuck in the stage lights! It took a group effort to clean up, but it was all part of the fun. This was, hands down, one of the most entertaining events I’ve ever been a part of.
The Adventure Continues
Being an Anywhere Library Specialist is unlike any job I’ve had before. No two visits are the same, and each stop brings new connections and unexpected moments. I can’t wait to see where the Anywhere Library takes me next!
