Supporting School-Age Youth
One of the priorities in TRL's newly-adopted strategic plan is to support school-age youth. At the Hoquiam Timberland Library, we implemented this priority in our programming by piloting a bi-monthly program called Homeschool Hangout in the winter and spring of 2025. This program was developed with homeschool families in mind, and focuses on providing time to meet, learn, and create while at the library.
Now that Summer Library Program has wrapped up, we are bringing it back for the fall and, because it was so successful. we are expanding the program to both the Montesano and Oakville libraries.
What is Homeschool Hangout?
Homeschool Hangout is an opportunity to build connections between the library, homeschool families, and other local organizations. Programs feature a mix of independent activities and visits from community partners who share their knowledge and experiences. As we discovered earlier this year, community connections made through the program were almost like a domino-effect - as we talked to one group they would recommend we reach out to another and so on.
Some of our past visitors include Leiko Yamauchi, educator for the Grays Harbor National Wildlife Refuge, who taught participants about shorebirds and how to draw them. A lot of fun was had creating both real and imaginary birds!
We also welcomed Becky Stitt, Community Engagement & Education Manager for the Coastal Interpretive Center, who brought macroinvertebrates and more to explore the watery world around us.
And to round out our community partners we hosted Grays Harbor Communications E9-1-1 too! They shared stories and answered questions about the work they do to highlight their role in the community as first responders.
You are invited to join us at one of our Homeschool Hangouts on the following dates and times this fall. Of note, Becky Stitt will return in October to Montesano and Hoquiam to lead programs on freshwater explorations and bird songs respectively!
