When I am not working at the library, one of my favorite hobbies that I have picked up over the years is making costumes. I have made things to go to various masquerade balls, renaissance faires, cosplay at cons, and just stuff for fun!
When I was just getting started, one of the first things I had to do was actually learn how to sew. It turns out that making a multi-layer ballgown is pretty hard to do if you don't even know how to hem your pants!
The library has been a big help for me when it comes to learning about making costumes and accessories, as well as exploring sewing in general. From the most basic sewing skills to, to getting costume ideas, or making EVA foam armor, the library has many resources to help you learn to make your own clothes and costumes as well.
Check out some of my favorites below to get started or continue your sewing and crafting journeys.

For more options, browse the catalog, request a personalized list, or utilize interlibrary loan for those out-of-print or hard-to-find books.
Also check out the Home, Hobby and Auto section of our online resources, to find the Hobbies & Crafts Source database for even more resources to browse through.
Finally, keep an eye on your local library’s programs as well! There are multiple locations within our system that host craft programs where you can learn new skills to contribute to your projects, or join us for community crafting sessions where you can bring in what you are working on and connect with other people who have similar interests.
Have fun creating, and we will see you at the library!
