The USDA Forest Service is collaborating with state and public library systems across the country this year to offer the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge in celebration of Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday. While several Timberland libraries offered storytimes and programs highlighting wildfire prevention this past summer, kids ages 4-10 are also invited to participate in the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge anytime beginning Sept 3rd through October 31st.
Kids can take the pledge, read books, and complete fun activities while learning more about wildfires and the environment. Smokey is the perfect guide to help kids understand the importance of fire safety in a way that’s easy to grasp and fun to learn.
Pick up activity logs at any Timberland location, download here or participate via the Beanstack app. Turn in completed logs by October 31st to earn a small prize.
“Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear Wildfire Prevention campaign is the longest-running public service advertising campaign in U.S. history, educating generations of Americans about their role in preventing wildfires…" "Despite the campaign's success over the years, wildfire prevention remains one of the most critical issues affecting our country. Smokey's message is as relevant and urgent today as it was in 1944.” Read more about the campaign and wildfire prevention on the official Smokey Bear site here.
