Computers & Wi-Fi FAQs

  • General Questions

Yes! All of our libraries have public computers and printers. Usage of the public computers is handled through a PC reservation system called Pharos.

Timberland uses the software Pharos to reserve and manage time on public computers. To reserve an Internet PC, please visit this link, opens a new window. Reservations may be made up to one week in advance. Computer reservations and drop-in sessions are available in 1-hour increments and will automatically extend at the end of the session if there are no other users waiting for a computer station.

Yes. Most TRL locations offer Wi-Fi access daily from 6:00 am until midnight. Outside of library hours Wi-Fi can be accessed in close proximity to the building (e.g. parking lot).

Look for the network "trlguest". No password is needed to connect to library Wi-Fi.

Public internet computers include Microsoft Office software Word, PowerPoint and Excel as well as Adobe Reader, Google Chrome and basic Microsoft Windows accessories.

Additional software may not be downloaded or installed on library computers.

Yes. You can print from your Wi-Fi device in all TRL libraries. Although the TRL Wi-Fi service hours are 6 am to midnight at most locations, 7 days/week, you can only release print jobs during your local library's open hours. For more information, see Mobile Printing FAQ.

Timberland libraries do not offer regular in-person computer instruction classes. However, some locations provide opportunities for drop-in tech help. See our events calendar for upcoming dates. Library users may also contact staff for individual assistance with personal devices or technology help. Staff can often make one-on-one appointments to assist you with your specific needs.

Additionally, multiple online resources provided self-paced courses on a wide variety of technology topics. LinkedIN Learning and Universal Class are two options to explore.

The library’s Wi-Fi network is not encrypted or guaranteed to be secure from interception. Information sent to or from your device could be intercepted by anyone within three hundred feet with a Wi-Fi device and with the appropriate software. Keep this in mind if you are accessing sensitive business or personal information. It is recommended that you access private web information only through a secure browser connection with SSL enabled.

It is recommended that you not enable file sharing or print sharing when using a public shared network. If you do so, other people may be able to gain access to your hard drive and files or misuse your device.

It is recommended that you have up-to-date virus detection software installed on your laptop, tablet or mobile device.

There is no time limit on Wi-Fi sessions.

Wi-Fi reception and connection speeds are affected by your distance from the TRL Wi-Fi equipment and by barriers such as brick walls, metal bookshelves, stairways and people. The number of computers in use in the local library and traffic on the wider Internet may also affect speed. Reception and speed may improve if you move to a different location in the building.

All Wi-Fi Internet access goes through TRL’s Internet content filter which blocks Internet sites that contain adult content. There is no provision for turning off the filter on the Wi-Fi network.
