Finding your Library Joy: National Library Week 2026

National Library Week is an annual celebration that highlights the valuable role that libraries, librarians, and library workers play in our communities. This year's theme is inspired by famous Librarian, Mychal Threets who coined the term "Library Joy".

"There are so many library kids and library grown-ups who have yet to fully embrace their library joy, and I am so excited for them! When they enter the world of libraries and stories, I am confident they will find not only their library joy but their courage to believe in their own story and maybe even share it with others." —Mychal Threets

There are 4 special celebration days during National Library Week:

Monday: Right to Read Day

On this day the American Library Association (ALA) publishes its State of America's Libraries Report, which provides a comprehensive snapshot of trends, challenges, and statistics affecting public, school, and academic libraries. It contains the annual list of the most challenged books of the previous year. ALA defines a challenge  as "an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group," and a book ban as "the removal of those materials."

Thursday: Take Action for Libraries Day

The last celebration day of National Library Week is Take Action for Libraries Day. Visit the ALA website for ways you can advocate and take action for libraries.
