The Power of Film: Cinema, Community, and the Library

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when strangers gather together in a dark room to watch a movie.

It’s easy to forget in an age of streaming, scrolling, and second screens. Movies have become increasingly private experiences — watched alone on couches, half-watched while folding laundry, paused for notifications and distractions. Convenient? Absolutely. But something gets lost when cinema becomes background noise.

A theater changes the equation.

In a darkened room, surrounded by other people, a film becomes something shared. Laughter ripples outward. Tension tightens collectively. Silence itself becomes meaningful. You can feel an audience breathe together during a beautiful scene or recoil at the same moment during something shocking or heartbreaking. For two hours, a room full of strangers quietly agrees to dream the same dream.

Before working at the library, I spent years as a movie theater owner and operator. It was exhausting, chaotic, wonderful work. Independent theaters are held together with duct tape, caffeine, optimism, and a deep belief that movies matter. I wore countless hats — projectionist, programmer, cleaner, marketer, repair technician, popcorn maker, customer service representative, and occasional therapist for lonely patrons who simply wanted someone to talk to after a screening.

What kept me going was seeing the way films connected people.

I watched friendships form in lobby conversations after screenings. I saw older patrons discover contemporary films they never would have sought out on their own. I watched teenagers stumble into foreign films, documentaries, or strange cult classics and realize cinema could be bigger and weirder and more meaningful than they imagined. Some nights, the audience itself became part of the experience — laughing together so hard it transformed the movie into something unforgettable.

That feeling stayed with me when I came to the library.

One of the things I’ve loved most about working at the library is bringing movies back into community spaces. Our film series has included everything from cult classics and family fantasy films to documentaries, international cinema, and art-focused screenings. We’ve watched the surreal landscapes of Donnie Darko, explored the painterly beauty of Loving Vincent, laughed our way through Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and revisited films that deserve to be experienced with an audience rather than alone at home.

Libraries and movie theaters actually have a lot in common. Both are democratic spaces built around shared experiences, curiosity, and access. Both invite people to encounter stories, ideas, emotions, and perspectives they might not otherwise discover. And both can create rare moments of collective humanity.

There’s something deeply comforting about sitting among neighbors while a movie flickers across a screen. In a fragmented world, it reminds us that stories are still one of the ways we connect to each other.

Sometimes the magic isn’t just the movie itself.

Sometimes the magic is hearing an entire room laugh together.

Sometimes it’s the quiet conversation afterward.

Sometimes it’s simply realizing that for a little while, none of us were alone.

And if you’d like to experience some of that movie magic for yourself, below you'll find the current film series happening at Timberland Regional Library in Lacey.

All films are presented free of charge through the library’s partnership with Kanopy, opens a new window, which provides access to films licensed for public screenings. Beyond our movie series, library card holders can also explore thousands of acclaimed films, documentaries, world cinema selections, and television series from home at no cost.

Whenever available, screenings are shown with closed captions because movies should be accessible and welcoming to as many people as possible. And yes, there is always free popcorn thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Lacey Library.
