As part of our Business Services team at the Pacific Mountain Workforce Development Council, opens a new window (PacMtn) I spend a lot of time in the community talking to employers and recruiting job seekers into high-demand occupations in our region. It can be a bit disheartening when we talk to youth, many of whom express a strong desire to “get out of dodge” once they finish school. This outlook is understandable when we look at the challenges that many of these youth face, particularly those in more rural communities.
But I’ve also seen how quickly that perspective can change when someone realizes their skills and interests actually match up with real jobs in local, thriving industries. That moment of connection, when people start to see their future right here in our region, is what inspires me most about the work we do at PacMtn.
That’s also why we’re so excited to offer a new series of Career Pathway Workshops, part of the Opportunity Begins Here campaign. These free, virtual sessions are designed to help job seekers discover in-demand careers right here in Thurston, Grays Harbor, Pacific, Lewis, and Mason Counties.
Connecting People and Possibilities
PacMtn’s Opportunity Begins Here campaign is all about connecting local talent to local opportunity, keeping communities strong through meaningful, sustainable employment. We focus on six key industries that are essential to our region’s economy and full of potential for long-term, family-wage careers:
-
- Healthcare
- Hospitality and Tourism
- Information Technology
- Food Production
- Specialty Manufacturing and Logistics
- Forest and Wood Products
Each of these sectors offers a variety of occupations and clear pathways to growth. Maybe you’ve wondered what it’s like to work in healthcare but weren’t sure where to begin. Or maybe you’re curious about how technology and AI are changing the job market and how your existing skills could fit in. The Career Pathways Workshops are a great way to learn more, ask questions, and connect with people who know these industries inside and out.
Every workshop includes:
-
- A look at current labor market trends and what local employers are looking for
- Information about training programs and certifications available in our region
- A live Q&A session with an industry expert who can share their personal experience and advice
And because the workshops are hosted online, you can join from anywhere.
