Talk Time: Practicing English, Making Friends, and Finding Belonging at TRL

Language learning is about more than vocabulary and grammar - it’s about confidence, connection, and community. That spirit is at the heart of Talk Time, our ongoing English conversation group that offers a friendly, welcoming space for adults to practice English in person.

Currently offered at both the Lacey and Olympia libraries, Talk Time is one of the many ways TRL supports language learners and newcomers in our region. There’s no cost and no pressure -  just people gathering weekly to speak, listen, laugh, and learn together. Whether someone is a recent immigrant, a longtime resident improving their fluency, or a community member strengthening their communication skills for work, Talk Time meets them with kindness and respect. Fluent and native English speakers enrich the group too, creating a space where everyone learns from one another.

A Safe Place to Practice English

Learning a new language as an adult can feel intimidating, especially when you’re unsure where to practice speaking. Talk Time provides a supportive environment where participants can share at their own pace, ask questions, and try out new words and phrases without fear of embarrassment.

Staff guide each session with warmth and flexibility. While we may introduce discussion topics or prompts, conversations tend to flow naturally, shaped by the questions and interests of the participants themselves. Some days the group chats about American holidays or cultural differences; other days, the conversation centers on practical vocabulary like making a doctor’s appointment, applying for a job, or preparing for a parent-teacher conference.

Some of the best moments happen when people help each other. Someone explains a word in Spanish or Korean, another translates it into Arabic. It’s a beautiful, collaborative kind of learning where participants teach and learn from one another.

Community Across Cultures

What makes Talk Time truly special is the sense of community that forms week after week. Many people attend regularly and build friendships across cultures and languages. It’s not uncommon for someone to walk in quietly, unsure if they belong, and leave an hour later smiling after sharing stories about their life, family, or home country.

Talk Time helped me not feel so alone,” one participant shared. “I moved here from Ukraine with my children, and I didn’t know anyone. Now I have friends, and I understand more English. It’s a good feeling.

The stories we hear are powerful: A grandmother who learned enough English at Talk Time to attend her granddaughter’s school play without needing a translator. A man from Venezuela who used Talk Time to build confidence before his first job interview. A woman from South Korea who now brings her neighbor, a new immigrant from Vietnam, to the group every week.

These moments remind us that libraries aren’t just about books -  they’re about belonging. Talk Time offers that in a deep and personal way.

Why Talk Time Matters

At the Lacey library, several participants have been attending for years, and we consistently see 14–20 people each week. These strong numbers show how essential the program is to our community and how participants value having a place to connect and grow.

And it’s not just English learners who benefit. Fluent and native English speakers are always welcome to join us - whether they want to help others, meet new people, or simply enjoy friendly conversation. They often tell us they come away with a deeper appreciation for global cultures and perspectives.

Oh, and have we mention the snacks? Each session includes drinks and light refreshments, because nothing brings people together quite like a warm cup of tea or a shared cookie.

A Welcoming Space for All

We understand that for many immigrants, refugees, and English learners, accessing resources can be overwhelming. That’s why Talk Time is designed to be as inclusive and barrier-free as possible. No registration is required. No library card or ID is needed. If you show up, you’re welcome.

Participants don’t need to bring anything - just a willingness to talk & listen. Many also discover helpful library resources through Talk Time, including job-search tools, free Wi-Fi, books and movies in multiple languages, and digital language-learning tools like Mango Languages. For many, Talk Time becomes a gateway to a wider world of support and opportunity.

If you or someone you know wants to practice English in a relaxed, friendly setting, please join us. Talk Time is waiting, and you’re more than welcome.
