Loneliness and isolation are silent yet severe public health crises affecting people of all ages, contributing to higher rates of anxiety, depression, and even premature death. Dr. Vivek Murthy, the U.S. Surgeon General, compares loneliness to smoking 15 cigarettes a day in terms of its impact on health. Despite living in a "connected" digital world, many feel more isolated than ever.
Community organizations like the South Sound YMCA, Senior Services for South Sound, United Way of Thurston County, and Timberland Regional Library are stepping up to bridge these gaps. We believe that places like the Y, local libraries, and senior centers are more than just facilities; they are vital community hubs where people build real, meaningful connections.
Research shows that people with strong social ties enjoy better health and resilience. Simple actions—volunteering, attending community events, or visiting your local library—help foster these bonds. By participating in community life, we create stronger, more connected, and resilient neighborhoods.
The journey to combat loneliness starts with each of us. Let’s move forward together, creating a society where no one feels alone. Together we can build a community where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Join us on December 10 from 5:30-7:00 PM for a virtual summit, Moving Forward Together: Social Connectedness and Prevention of Isolation, where we will explore the growing public health crisis of loneliness and social isolation, and learn how community services can help improve well-being and connectedness. This event will focus on how a lack of emotional connections impacts mental and physical health, and what organizations are doing to foster stronger, healthier communities. Attendees will gain insights into the health risks of isolation and learn about services that help people of all ages stay connected.
