Your Money Back in Your Pocket: Apply for the Working Families Tax Credit Today

Nobody likes thinking about taxes. Not in April, and certainly not in August. We're at least five months away from W-2 season so unless you're in a protracted battle with the IRS right now you're probably enjoying the blissful respite from thoughts of deductions, credits, penalties and getting to the library before we run out of instruction booklets.

Or you were...before you started reading this. But stick with me. We at the library are connectors, and we love sharing information. Sometimes that information is a great book recommendation, and sometimes it can get hundreds of your own money dollars in your pocket. In this case I'm talking about the Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC), and even though it says 'tax' right in the name the deadline to apply hasn't passed. In fact, you have up to three years to apply so if you're eligible you can still get money back for both the 2022 and 2023 benefit years.

If you've never heard of the WFTC you're not alone. In each of the 5 counties served by TRL less than 50%, opens a new window of eligible participants have enrolled in the program. East of the Cascades over in Adams County that number is 93%. We're smarter and cooler than them, aren't we? We like tax refunds just as much, right? Right. I think we could get our numbers quite a bit higher. And why not? If you qualify you and your family could get as much as $1255 of your money back.

The application is pretty simple and can be completed online. Find out whether you are eligible and what you need to apply here:

Need some help? As with anything tax-related I know it can be nice to have someone help out with the process. Luckily, there are community organizations in each county who can help answer questions and assist you in applying, including our friends at Enterprise for Equity, opens a new window and Family Education & Support Services, opens a new window. Alright, that's enough tax talk for late August!
